The fifth season of Race Across The World is properly underway.

The BBC reality travel show has tasked 5 companions to race throughout China, Nepal and India. And they’ve been set the problem of doing it on the lowest price range in the present’s historical past – simply over £1,000 per individual.

While this season of Race Across The World has as soon as once more been successful with viewers, there have been grumbles from certain quarters.

The complaints largely centre round the present’s steadiness between the private again tales of the duos and the high-wire drama of getting from A to B on the low-cost.

Many fans suppose the so-called sob tales have occupied an excessive amount of display screen time, as @fish-and-cushion posited in a buzzy Reddit dialogue which playfully dubbed the present Sob Story Across The World. (Ouch).

@bobblebob100 agreed that the deal with contestant backstories might be ‘a bit irritating’, however added: ‘But that’s on the producers not the contestants. They clearly ask them the questions.’

‘The sob stories have ruined it for me. It’s good to see {couples} bond and enhance their relationships (or argue) however the fixed sob tales are ridiculous,’ @_I__yes__I_ echoed.

@purpletshirtz added that they thought the present’s runtime could be higher spent on the ins and outs of the race, writing: ‘I think we’re lacking out on the most important story of their journey.

‘Ie where they sleep each night, what/where they eat for each meal, hotel, hostel etc, when they get ill, what they do when they all meet up at a nice hotel. We’re not even positive of the timings this sequence. The behind the scenes programme is way more informative and, imo, attention-grabbing.’

Are the RATW’s ‘sob tales’ changing into a problem?

Our Deputy TV Editor Tom Percival shares his ideas…

Honestly,I don’t get why individuals are complaining about the ‘sob stories’. One of the finest issues about Race Across the World is the method the problem offers these collaborating the confidence to debate no matter it could be that motivated them to go on this unimaginable journey.

And whereas I get why individuals may suppose there’s a bit extra backstory than earlier sequence, the sequence could be extremely uninteresting if all we have been doing have been watching individuals silently go from prepare, to aircraft, to automobile and again once more. It could be the equal of watching somebody do their morning commute!

No backstory teaches us about the groups, their relationships, and their lives. It lets us know who to root for, who’s come the furthest, and who’s obtained the longest left to go. If you narrow the sob tales, you may as properly reduce the entire present.

However, different fans have been eager to defend the emotional beats in the present, with @IceKalisto writing: ‘I find that it’s the tales that make the present totally different from different journey programmes. Without attending to know the groups it wouldn’t be that attention-grabbing.’

‘I like the stories too,’ wrote @Constant_Oil_3775. ‘I like hearing everyone’s tales it might be nice to listen to from the individuals they keep with as properly.’

Race Across The World airs Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
